ANNA HARDING

Artist Statement

My work is both conceptual and intuitive. Underlying this is an interest in places and their vibe, the past visible in the present. I often make art about modernist legacies, futures which haven’t quite worked out according to the dream. I'm also highly influenced by the changing seasons.
Nature increasingly creeps into my work, the power of nature to take over, the resilience of urban weeds.
I often explore ubiquitous modernist values of which I'm a product, something which is experienced as a quiet abandonment. My work responds to sites, seasons and weather conditions. I often consider my experience of growing up in a period of optimistic modernism and the legacy of that are in a present faced with urgent environmental and urban challenges.
I paint in oils, on linen and canvas, also large format watercolour, drawing and print. I have dabbled with video and sound and would like to do more.
My studio is in East London near the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Brief Biography

I started my art practice 5 years ago as a late developer after a career in the arts and raising a family. I bring wisdom, resourcefulness and resilience to my practice. I studied at alternative art schools Turps, the ESOP and Contemporary Art Academy as well as the Royal Drawing School, all in London.

I originally studied History and History of Art at UCL, followed by an MA in Art Education and NEA postgraduate diploma in contemporary art museum curating.
I then worked at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Whitechapel, Hayward Gallery, Camerawork and Kettles Yard Cambridge. I was the founding Programme Director of the MA Creative Curating at Goldsmiths Visual Arts Department which I ran for 8 years, receiving the Pearce Award for Excellence and Innovation. Most recently I worked as CEO at SPACE www.spacestudios.org.uk which was founded by Bridget Riley + Peter Sedgley in 1968 and is a charity supporting London’s artist community primarily through affordable studios for c.900 artists. Alongside my art practice I also write and research relating to my artwork. I have edited several art books.
